Aus dem Erbe der Habsburger Sammlungen bietet der Museumsverband Einblicke in Kunst und Kultur Ägyptens, der Antiken Welten, Kunst- und Wunderkammern und dem Europäischen Mittelalter und der Neuzeit. Die Gemäldegalerie stellt mit seiner unvergleichlichen Sammlung von Meisterwerken von Brueghel, Tizian, Caravaggio und Vermeer einen Höhepunkt dar. Das Gebäude wurde als Hofmuseum 1891 eröffnet und gehört zu den Prunkgebäuden der Wiener Ringstraße.

Sacred Colors: The Role of Color in Roman Religion (in English)
Discover how color shaped Roman religious practice! This presentation explores why certain hues held sacred power, which colors were deemed favorable, and how they featured in rituals – especially in the cult of Mithras. Who was Mithras, and what colors mattered to his followers? Clues lie in the polychromy of the tauroctony relief from Stixneusiedl, a striking centerpiece of the Vitrine Extra exhibition currently on view at the KHM.

Guided tour: black as a raven - colourful? (in English)
In its sixth edition, the special presentation Vitrine EXTRA, which regularly presents various antique objects temporarily in the permanent exhibition of the Collection of Classical Antiquities at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, follows in the colourful footsteps of Greco-Roman antiquity. Based on a relief depicting Mithras, the god of light, the presentation focuses on the vibrant multicoloured nature of Roman statues and monuments - impressively demonstrating just how colourful they originally were! On the occasion of the ‘European Archaeology Days’, the team of experts from the ‘PolychroMon’ project will be on site to provide information about current research into the polychromy of antiquity.

Führung: Rabenschwarz – Farbenfroh?
Die Sonderpräsentation Vitrine EXTRA, die in regelmäßigen Abständen in der Antikensammlung des Kunsthistorischen Museums unterschiedliche antike Objekte vorübergehend in der Dauerausstellung präsentiert, begibt sich in ihrer sechsten Ausgabe auf die farbigen Spuren der griechisch-römischen Antike. Anhand eines Reliefs mit der Darstellung des Lichtgottes Mithras rückt die Präsentation die lebendige Vielfarbigkeit von römischen Statuen und Monumenten in den Fokus – eindrucksvoll zeigt sie, wie farbenprächtig diese ursprünglich waren! Anlässlich der "European Archaeology Days" steht das Expert*innen-Team des Projekts "PolychroMon" vor Ort zur Verfügung um über die aktuelle Forschungen zur Polychromie der Antike zu informieren.
