The Turaida Museum Reserve invites to explore the wide sides of archaeology. On June 13th we invite to learn more from leading specialists about archaeological textiles in a public seminar. On June 15th we invite people of all ages to explore workshops, that will show and teach about archaeology and archaeological textiles.

Exciting Archaeology for Children

Exciting Archaeology for Children in the Turaida castle will host different workshops that will introduce visitors of all ages to the archaeological heritage of Turaida. In the castle courtyard anyone will be able to practically try out different textile crafting techniques, such as card weaving, needle binding, weaving, textile dying, and other crafts. The event will craft new skills and promote the longevity of these traditions. The day will end with a puppetry theater play "Reiz Micīšciemā...".

Seminar and discussion "Clothing and Identity"

The seminar at the Turaida Magazine building will host readings by leading experts who will discuss archaeological textiles and clothing and their use in crafting and identifying cultural identity. The focus will be on the oldest inhabitants of Turaida region, the Gauja Livs, who were the leading political and cultural force in the 11th to 13th century. The discussion will try to find answers about what is known today as well as understand the unknown aspects of archaeological textiles.
