There and Back: The Pilgrimages of Livonians in Medieval Europe.
Pilgrimages formed an intrinsic part of mediaeval life. Pilgrims from Livonia travelled to sacred places near and far; foreign pilgrims, on the other hand, visited more or less known local places. All of these activities left various traces in the local material culture of the time: from symbols used in art and on everyday items to the clothing worn by pilgrims and the souvenirs they brought back from their travels.
This exhibition, which provides an overview of the phenomenon, is the first opportunity for the public to see the majority of currently known Estonian and Latvian material artefacts, as well as the textual and artistic legacy, of Livonian pilgrimages.

This exhibition, which provides an overview of the phenomenon, is the first opportunity for the public to see the majority of currently known Estonian and Latvian material artefacts, as well as the textual and artistic legacy, of Livonian pilgrimages. There is now sufficient evidence to suggest that our pilgrim culture, rooted in personal piety, was much richer than previously believed in two respects: the number of destinations and the range of different pilgrimage practices.

In 2022 a 14th century wreck was discovered in the coastal area of Tallinn, which continues to offer surprising discoveries for archaeologists. The wreck is currently being conserved in the Seaplane Harbour. Museum scientist Priit Lätti offers an exclusive chance to take a look at the wreck during the EAD 2024. There were hundreds of finds connected to seafaring and everyday life in the wreck, which are currently being restored and prepared to be displayed.

Archaeologist Priit Lätti introduces the 14th century wreck found in Tallinn, which is currently being conserved at the Maritime Museum.
The wreck of a well-preserved mediaeval ship was found near the Old City Harbour of Tallinn on Lootsi Street in 2022. The excavations were led by Muinasprojekt OÜ (Mihkel Tammet and Silver Jäger), and after the work was completed, the wreck was transported to the Estonian Maritime Museum in four pieces. The well-preserved wreck offers archaeologists surprising discoveries, which Priit Lätti is going to share with visitors during the EAD 2024.

Traces of "Forest brothers" in the woods of Kose

Some 10 000 partisans fought against the Soviet occupation in Estonia from 1940 to 1956. In addition, people from all walks of life hid themselves in the forests in the fear of the Red Army. Archaeologist Arnold Unt will guide a tour in Kose, introducing material evidence of what has survived from those times - bunkers, places of battles, and monuments that have been erected to honour the memory of people who fought against the Soviet forces.

Archaeological Fieldwork in Estonia 2023
Every year around 200–250 archaeological surveys and excavations are carried out in Estonia. The travelling exhibition, organised by the Estonian Association of Archaeologists, presents the results of 19 individual projects from 2023. In addition to research carried out at burial and settlement sites, Iron Age hillforts and Medieval castles, the richly illustrated exhibition showcases the results from urban and underwater archaeology projects as well as the most significant finds discovered by metal detecting in 2023. Admission free of charge. The exhibition was supported by Eesti Kultuurkapital, Arheograator OÜ, Arheoloogiakeskus MTÜ, Arheox OÜ and Muinasprojekt OÜ.
