The Piano Tour at the Church of Panagia Aggeloktisti
2 Arch. Kyprianou 7550 Kitihttps://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5987/
The church of Panagia Aggeloktisti dates to the 11th c. and was built over the ruins of a 5th c. early Christian basilica. It preserves a superb decoration including one of the most significant and elaborate wall mosaics of early Christian art (6th c). The monument demonstrates the co-existence of artistic expressions from early Christian and Medieval art as well as ecclesiastical architectural development diachronically, over a wide temporal spectrum. It represents a range of international values – historical, artistic, religious, social, educational – and is central in the bibliography of Byzantine art and research. The church of Panagia Aggeloktisti was submitted as a possible UNESCO World Heritage Site and is currently on the list of Tentative UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
