The tradition of museology in Suwałki dates back to 1907-1908, when the Suwałki Land Museum began to be organised at the School of Commerce, opening in June 1909. During World War I, the collections were taken to Russia. The museum of the same name was established again in 1956 as a social institution. Two years later it was nationalised. After the Suwałki Voivodeship was established, the Suwałki Region Museum became the District Museum in Suwałki in 1975. Since 1 January 1999, it has been subordinate to the Suwałki Regional County. The Museum is housed in a historic building of the former Resursa Obywatelska, erected in the years 1912-1913.

Discovering the Yatvings
The event 'Discovering the Yatvings' will take place at the District Museum in Suwałki on 16 June (Friday). These will be workshops presenting archaeological research - excavations arranged in front of the museum building combined with making documentation from field research - laboratory work.
Wydarzenie "Odkrywamy Jaćwingów" będzie miało miejsce w Muzeum Okręgowym w Suwałkach w dniu 16 czerwca (piątek). Będą to warsztaty prezentujące badania archeologiczne - wykopaliska zaaranżowane przed budynkiem muzeum połączone z wykonywaniem dokumentacji z badań terenowych - praca laboratoryjna.
