NAIM-BAS covers the complete study of the culture of tribes and peoples who have occupied present-day Bulgaria from the remote past until the 18th century, It is a national center and coordinator of all field research in Bulgaria and exercises scholarly and methodological control on it. The Museum of Archaeology hosts the most numerous collections in Bulgaria and its exhibitions reveal it as one of the most important centers in the country for promotion of the cultural heritage of present day Bulgaria. Its academic and museum potential turns it into the bigest research and archaeological unit in southeast Europe. NAIM-BAS was established in 1949 as a follower and successor of a National Museum (1892), and the Bulgarian Institute of Archaeology (1921).

Exhibition

Bulgarian Archaeology 2022
For sixteenth consecutive year the National Archaeological Institute with Museum, together with 17 museums from the country, organizes the temporary exhibition “Bulgarian Archaeology“. Τhe exhibition present the most interesting and impressive discoveries and researches from the last active archaeological season. A total of 30 sites are included, illustrating the development of cultures in present-day Bulgaria from the Neolithic (6000 BC) until the Middle Ages. Among the artifacts on display are gold, silver, and bronze adornments, fine ceramic anthropomorphic figurines, pottery vessels, marble votive reliefs, and elaborate wall decorations, coins, tools, weapons.

The price of the museum ticket is 12 BGN, and it is valid both for the temporary exhibition “Bulgarian Archaeology 2022“, and the permanent collection of NAIM-BAS. Free admissions for ICOM card holders and people with disabilities.

The guided tour (ιn English language) costs 40 BGN.

The National Archaeological Museum (Sofia) is a real treasury of the Bulgarian Cultural Heritage and kept in his depositories more than 450 000 artifacts. Established in 1892 as separate institution its permanent exhibitions are displayed in four main halls: “Ηall Prehistory“; “Ηall Depository“; “Central hall“, and “Ηall Middle Ages“, representing the most interesting and valuable evidences for the civilizations that had inhabited the present-day Bulgarian lands: the prehistoric cultures, the Thracians, the Greeks and the Romans, The Slavs and the Proto-Bulgarians, the Byzantines, the Ottomans.

Virtual Tour of The National Museum of History
The National Historical Museum (Национален исторически музей, Natsionalen istoricheski muzey) in Sofia is Bulgaria's largest museum. It was founded on 5 May 1973. A new representative exhibition was opened in the building of the Court of Justice on 2 March 1984, to commemorate the 13th centenary of the Bulgarian state. The museum was moved in 2000 to one of the major buildings in the complex serving as official residence of the President, Vice President and Government of the Republic of Bulgaria.[1], and currently contains over 650,000 objects connected to archaeology, fine arts, history and ethnography, although only 10% of them are permanently exhibited.
